Mes Aynak, Afghanistan, is the location of an ancient settlement that also contains remnants of 5,00-year-old Buddhist Statues. It’s location on the Silk Road meant that in it’s heyday, its culture was influenced by goods and visitors from Iran, China, and India. It location is also famous for being the site of Afghanistan’s largest copper deposit. This ancient and culturally significant city is currently considered to be a culturally significant site and excavations are ongoing.
This site is now of interest to art looters and it is important that cultural institutions and governments work together to save this significant city. To that end, IPCH has teamed up with the Yale Himalaya Institute to bring a film entitled Saving Mes Aynak to Yale University. It will be shown at the Luce Hall Auditorium on Saturday, October 17th at 7:00pm. Following the movie, the director Brent E. Huffman will be present to answer any questions.
