Stephens presents lecture at the 40th ACS NERM Meeting in Ithaca

June 15, 2015

High above Lake Cayuga’s waters, the American Chemical Society (ACS) recently held its 40th Northeast Regional Meeting (NERM) at Ithaca College, in Ithaca, NY.

IPCH’s Dr. Catherine Stephens was invited by one of Ithaca College’s Chemistry professors, Dr. Mike Haaf, to give a lecture in the Intersections of Chemistry and Art section. Dr. Stephens’ presentation was entitled, Degradation of polymers used to make art: origins, measurement, and prevention, and was focused on her research into the structure-property relationships of aging paper. Following her lecture, she was asked several questions regarding paper manufacture and technology and why some papers are in better shape than others.

Dr. Haaf will be traveling to Yale this summer to participate in the Summer Teachers Institute in Technical Art History (STITAH), so he and Dr. Stephens will soon continue to develop their newly formed professional relationship.
