Handheld XRF Workshops for Conservators at Yale
In May 2025, Dr. Anikó Bezur, Wallace S. Wilson Director of the Heritage Science Research Lab at IPCH led an in-depth X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) Workshop for Conservators at Yale at Yale’s Poorvu Center.
The workshop focused on the instrument’s fundamentals and applications. It was a training opportunity for conservators to gain an understanding of what questions XRF can answer and when it may not be the most useful instrument for analysis.
The workshop introduced a common language for colleagues to use when analyzing the materiality of objects from across Yale’s collections.
Dr. Anikó Bezur holds two handheld XRFs to introduces the instruments.

Margarita Matos Rodriguez, ChRP Fellow at IPCH, and Theresa Fairbanks-Harris, Senior Conservator of Works on Paper at YUAG & Senior Conservator of Paper for the Yale Center for British Art Center at the YCBA, practice setting up the XRF.
X-ray safety was taught during the workshop and remains top of mind when using a handheld XRF. This caution sign was new sight a the Porvoo Center for Teaching and Learning!
