Gordon Research Conference poster explores mysterious salt on 15th century polychrome terracotta relief

July 31, 2014

In late July 2014 Anikó Bezur, Gwénaëlle Kavich and Jens Stenger presented a poster on the discovery of an unusual chloride compound called challacolloite on the surface and within the remaining paint layers of a terracotta relief created by Michele da Firenze ca. 1435. The relief has been undergoing treatment at the Yale University Art Gallery by Carol Snow and Elena Torok to clean and stabilize its painted surface in preparation for exhibition.
