Raquel Barreto is Chief Curator of the Museu de Arte Moderna do Rio de Janeiro (MAM Rio) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where she leads curatorial initiatives that expand Brazilian art history through critical research, exhibition-making, and the inclusion of historically marginalized artists, narratives, and practices. Through her work, she has developed major curatorial projects that challenge established canons of Brazilian art history and has advanced the preservation of memory through public and community-based archives, particularly those built by Black and peripheral communities. Previously, she worked across institutions including MAM Bahia, the Instituto Moreira Salles, the Museu de Arte do Rio, CCBB, and SESC, and has maintained an independent curatorial practice grounded in historical research, archival inquiry, and public engagement. Her work focuses on archival practice, Black histories, and historiographical research, advancing the preservation of memory and the expansion of cultural narratives within Brazilian art history.
